Actually, I have tried this too - I made a post maybe a month or two about a problem I was having with the proprietary driver. If I use "nvidia" instead of "nv", the nice nVidia splash screen logo appears, but then it never goes away (and nothing else happens). I have dual monitors, and the other one comes up fine, but the video card in question seems so proud to be an nVidia card that it is going to tell me that forever. Could this also have something to do with the glx extensions? Some more info in case it is relevant: I have an nVidia Riva TNT 2 (32 MB), which is getting up there in age now (I think it's 5 years old now...but this thing was the bomb when I bought it!) I'm running Gentoo, and it's fully updated within a week or so.
