Wow...
I've never had any issue with Evolution, since version
1.somethingoranother. It's fast, and I have 8 different POP/IMAP
accounts in it, around 50 vfolders, and about 30 filters. My calendar is
loaded, and I've taken the same ~/.evolution with me through 6 different
distributions over the years. (Thankfully it changed from ~/evolution to
~/.evolution - that always got on my nerves, seeing it in Nautilus).
What distro are you using? Did it come preinstalled? What version of
Evolution?
If you do go with Thunderbird, there is a Calendar plugin for Firefox
and Thunderbird, or check out the Mozilla Sunbird project:
