Arron,

Well, when it is in bridge mode, the Linksys firewall gets the IP address the
ISP assigns to it, so there is no possibility
of communications with the Westell. I suspect that it does have that internal
ip address, but there is not way to route to
it or access it. I really dont want to put a switch between the bridge and
firewall and put yet another machine on the
network. (Which I dont have either machine). It would really be nice if the
USB interface just worked.

Well I finally got it to work. Here what I did on the westell router.
1) in the vc configuration, i set it up for bridging
2) I turned off the dhcp support
3) I turned off the dns server.

The box is now just a passthrough box, with one hitch, I have no way of managing it or moniting it because all management is by tcpip and now it is a bridge.

Hence, my question about usb ethenet driver for the westell

If I could plug this in, it would be a brige on the ethenet, but I could could be directly connected on the usb and that would be nice.

It's often the case that even in bridge mode, it maintains an IP address on the "internal" Ethernet interface. Unfortunately, because of the less-than-configurable router between your actual internal subnet and it's internal interface, you probably won't be able to configure the IP addressing in such a fashion that you can talk to it directly. On the other hand, if you have an old box lying around to put linux on, and replace that router (or if you're using a router along the lines of the WRT54G, which runs Linux under the hood), you can use an additional IP subnet on the external interface of the router (the "internal" interface of the bridge) and be able to address the bridge when the network is properly cabled up for normal operation.
