Sounds like an IBM Thinkpad....

Atheros chipset wireless card?  If so, I dunno if any distros have the
madwifi driver "built in" to the system as it is not part of the
standard linux kernel yet.

I've got a IBm T41 with Atheros chipset wireless and figure having to
'cd src/madwifi; make clean; make install' after installing a new kernel
is a small price to pay for an excellent laptop. :-)
