Hi Rick,

Do you have a spare hard disk or a spare partition (just a few GB is
fine) on that machine or even a different machine?  If so, you could
easily install almost any distro onto it and then copy it over to use as
your chroot-ed environment.  Its easy and it works:

And speaking of chroot-like things, Jeremy Katz gave a very neat Xen
demo at FUDCon #1:

during which he did a quick install/setup of Fedora within a Xen
environment on a running Fedora system.
