I haven't played with a v3, but you don't need the ping exploit to install.  
It's just a way to get bootwait turned on so you can recover from a failed 
firmware flash.

You can use the Linksys firmware loader to install OpenWRT directly.

(Note: look on the www.openwrt.org site forums first to see if there are issues
with the v3 hardware.  I haven't used one of those.)
