I didn't have a PCMCIA nic handy, but I did have a USB based one. The USB nic worked perfectly.
Other suggestions ?

- make sure iptables is totally off - strace the ping command, look for hints - boot a live cd (knoppix et al) and see what happens with that - install and boot a different kernel
