anyone interested in a "hack your wrt" day? might be a neat way to
share knowledge and try out things that might otherwise be too daunting.

That said, I've only played with Sveasoft and I'm not aware if they've
made "easy to use" client mode a feature. OpenWRT has several
instances of folks having used it as such, and a fairly responsive
community.
If for price alone, try messing with OpenWRT first. Besides, that's
the one I'm most curious about... ;-)
