What were the commands you did use to get the "make bzImage", in sequence?
You might want to try just rebuilding teh FC3 kernel - to do that, pull down the SRPM, and run "rpmbuild --rebuild <filename>" where filename is the name of the .src.rpm for the new kernel. Obviously, this wouldn't work for a non-RPM (possibly even non-Fedora/RHEL) system...
