Regarding the RPM problem you mention, it doesn't sound like it has anything to
do with RPM itself (it is just a package format, after all) rather the quality
of your network connection and whichever mirror's network connection you happen
to be using. If you can be a bit more specific about what's happening, such as
"When I execute 'up2date -uf' it always halts in the middle of downloading
package foo", we might be able to provide more helpful suggestions.

Regarding the video display problems, I'm admittedly not familiar with your
laptop and what specific chip it contains. However, I have seen in some cases
using nVidia/ATI's proprietary drivers will produce a marked increase in
responsiveness. The proprietary drivers come with their own problems (both
technical and philosophical), but it might clear up those video artifacts.

It looks like you can find the ATI drivers here:

I should note that I have never used them myself.

I know there's a good Indian place (called Royal India Cusine, iirc) up on
Capital Blvd. There's also an ok middle eastern place called Nur Deli in the
plaza on Avent Ferry, which is extremely close to Red Hat's HQ.
