I have an old Surfboard (pre-Motorola buy-out) cablemodem that I got when I was beta-testing with TWC.

It does 5MB down just fine.

Hmm....tell me more about this 5mbit standard!!! I'm up in Wake
Forest, my best download max's out at about 400KB (from kernel.org)
which mathematically translates to 3Mb...what kind of speed do you get
now? What model is your new modem so I can check mine at home?

I do hope they've turned the juice up in my area!!!

Thanks,
Steve

I have no problem running my own email server at home... 4 domains
even... and all outbound I smart-relay through smtp-server.nc.rr.com
and have never had issues doing so. Earthlink runs over Time Warner's
lines. Skip Bellsouth or any DSL in my opinion. Cable in this area
is 5mbit down, 384k up with optional 8mbit down 512k up if you want a
"premium" package. Sorry Tanner, 5mbit is already standard! If you
aren't getting it, you need to swap your cable modem. Kevin and I did
it with no questions asked. :) 8mbit is the extra now. :)

As an alternative to Time Warner, let me recommend Earthlink Cable. If
you do it right, you can get it for a few dollars cheaper each month,
and like like to give you the first 6 months for a lot cheaper. Some
advantages other than price are a great network of dial-up locations,
and they don't require the strange scripts that time warner at least
used to use for dial-up when you need it. Also, earthlink provides an
authenticated smtp server which you can use from anywhere. That's no
longer an issue for me, but previously I didn't have smtpauth at work,
and time warner didn't provide it at home, so I had to keep switching
smtp servers. Earthlink let me just use a single server on my laptop.
It's the same network as time warner, so you get the same speed and
quality of service. It just has a few other advantages over time warner
that I appreciate.

First, allow me to welcome you the area. I have been in Chapel Hill for 4
years now and I really like it. With that said, I would recommend Time
Warner's Road Runner service, and seriously caution against anything Bell
South. I have been with Road Runner for almost a long as I have been in
the area and the service is consistent, fast, and geek freindly, i.e. they
don't give you a hard time about running your own servers off their
service, provided they are non-commercial.

I will be moving to the Durham/Chapel Hill's area this weekend from
Mississippi. What would be a good home broadband provider in the area?

Thanks,
