Dell deals can be damn good, but you have to be willing to monitor the deal sites and wait. I got my 600m cheap that way, and it seems to work as well as any laptop I've owned (IBMs included) with linux. If you decide to go this route, the best deals will give you almost 50% off ($750 off $1500+, 35% off plus free upgrades, the list just goes on and on). http://techbargains.com http://www.gotapex.com and http://www.fatwallet.com are some of the deal sites but there are many more.
Before you buy, its worth checking out how well the laptop, and its components work.
