There are two popular UPS daemons. apcupsd and nut (Network UPS Tools). apcupsd is for APC UPSes only. NUT works well with pretty much all of them. NUT has some extra fancy features that some may appreciate, but if all you have is APC, I'd tend to stick with apcupsd. I tend to think it has better support for the APC features. That's what I use for everything, and I've never had problems with it. It has an excellent method of controlling several servers connecting to the same UPS.
