If I wanted to set up this up at our office ( or at home),
all I would need is an asterisk server, and a bunch of
softphones ( or usb phones)?

How much bandwidth do I need for say 8 person conference call?

Has anybody tried this? Would it work on a good broadband
isp?
It looks like I could do the same thing with skype.

The free conference is a bit of a misnomer since you have to pay
$.10/minute/line. The same price we (FeatureTel) charge for our
conference bridge.

We use an Asterisk box for our conference bridge. The setup was very
simple, and MeetMe conferencing works very well on it. It basically
accepts SIP connections from our servers and clients and joins them into
conferences based on a login number - each conference has a special
login number associated with it.

VoIP is really going to be driving the pricing down on conferencing. The
scalability and ease of setup make conferencing much easier than the old
traditional Bridges. BTW: that site www.freeconference.com looks and
acts just like our Asterisk conference bridge, and since the pricing is
identical I'll bet it *is* Asterisk based :-)

Subject: Re: [TriLUG] conference call solution -- old school

I would like to replace the AT&T conference call with something
cheaper.
This does not address the "whiteboard" problem, but...

Our company uses a free voice conference system called "Free Conference".It's a traditional phone-based conference system, not a computer-based
system. Old school.

Conference calls are free if you use a non-8xx number. Since many peoplehave free long distance with their cell phones, VOIP or with a bundled
landline service plan, the conference calls can be pretty cheap/free.
