You may also wish to spend a short amount of time on what's considered 
acceptable and desireable behavior on the net. For better or worse, Linux users 
tend to be more sensitive to such things as, for example, HTML e-mail. As it so 
happens, your most recent message is HTML and looks like this in my mail reader 
of choice:

While it's certainly possible to manually parse all that, many aren't going to 
think it's worthwhile doing so and will ignore your message. 

If you're going to recommend your students utilize forums/IRC channels/mailing 
lists/etc for help, I'd strongly suggest having them read 
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html as well.
