i have a simple "test" i've given to prospective employees:

i create a user account on one of my servers, start a screen session, and have them log in and attach to the session (that way i can see what they're doing). i then say "you have fifteen minutes to tell me everything you can about this machine. go." it will quickly become apparent how much linux they really know.

That's an interesting test from an employment perspective. What kinds of information are you hoping they report to you or what tasks do wish to see them to perform?

partially i'm interested in the results they return, partially i'm interested in *how* they got the results, and partially i'm interested in seeing how they work under pressure. there's no "right" answer.

i also like to toss in the occational oddball question to see how people handle them. one of my favorites is "who is the best james bond actor and why?" it's not all about ones and zeros :)
