You did edit the correct modes line, ie; the one pointed to by the
DefaultDepth line?
Also, did you change the DefaultDepth to a higher setting, was it 16 and
you also changed it to a 24 bit color depth? (my intel815 chip cannot
run in 24 bit mode, gives me large lines spaced through the display)
looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log (as Owen pointed out) should tell you (or
us if you post it on tripaste) where the error is.
