Like many open source projects, planet seems somewhat thin on documentation. Download the tarball, read the INSTALL file and look at the examples is the best advice I can give. It is really simple, though. I setup planet on my home server so I could aggregate all my non livejournal friends' blogs together (since LJ already aggregates theirs for me) and it took me maybe 30 minutes to get it setup initially (most of that trying to figure out how to convert from the opml export from my stand-alone aggregator to the planet format [wrote a quick perl script to do it]). From that, setting up planet trilug was about a 5 minute job. It literally took more time to figure out why cron kept dying than to setup planet.
