Thermite would definitely do it. When I was a spook in the Navy, thermite was available at some shore sites to be used for emergency destruction. Ships didn't have any. Go figure. ;-)

The DOD data destruction standard calls for writing binary 1s and 0s over the entire disk at least four times. Once that is done, the drive is sanitized.

If it's "good enough for government work," it should be good enough for you. Then you can donate the drives to a needy charity (*cough* TriLUG *cough*) rather than have them take up space in a landfill.
