While that may correspond, its not the defining factor in the difference between Old and New World Macs, the difference is a major change in the ROM organization, and introduction of Open Firmware. (yea, there are some Old World macs with early versions of OF on them, like my Apple Network Server, but I digress...)

For a little more information on the structural and technical differences, if you're curious, check this out: http:// developer.apple.com/technotes/tn/tn1167.html

ps: anyone want to mess with a PowerMac 5400 (all-in-one, pre-G3), or an Apple Network Server?

Old world --> new world changover point is this:

If it has a floppy, it's oldworld.
If not, it's newworld.

So my real question is: does anybody on the list have an "old world" mac? If so, have you tried putting Linux on it? What'd you put on it?
I've got one under the futon that needs to be resurrected.

Yellow Dog Linux Champion Server 1.1 installed fine on my "Wall Street"
model Powerbook, G3 / 300MHz, summer 1999, as I recall.

The kids these days! <G>

So I guess that an "old world" mac is one which is running a G3.

What do you call the old 680x0 macs?
