I haven't tried it, but the first thing that came to mind when you said the
file needed to stay intact was:
cdrecord your_big_file.gz'.

Then:
unzip /dev/cdrom
when you needed to expand. I don't know if cdrecord will do it or if there
is something with the cdr format that will screw it up.
