Unplugging the printer from the USB port? Then stopping hotplug and cupsys, then starting hotplug, then cupsys? Check the log files in /var/log/messages too, since there's likely some good info there. Luckily for me, I don't see this problem on my sarge<->USB connected HP deskjet setup.
