I guess what it comes down to is old hardware.
I was interested in the xubuntu-desktop idea as it appears to be a
lighter desktop... but I couldn't find it in the Aptitude packages
listings.
Not sure if you want a lighter desktop environment or distribution, but
you might check out Ubuntu Lite:

I haven't tried it yet, but I probably will when I re-assemble one of my
old machines.
