Especially now that Sun won't provide an x86-64 JRE for Linux. Like a lot of other folks, I have an amd64 workstation and am loathe to install a 32 bit browser just for a plugin. Regarding Java - most Java apps I've had experience with seem very finnicky about having a JRE that is a very specific version and will behave unpredictably if you vary from that. Additionally, most are just plain slow. Javascript, on the other hand, seems to be pretty consistent and seemless.
