Have you verified that udev is creating the /dev/mapper nodes correctly? On my
2.6.15 system (FC4), /dev/[VG name] is just a directory with the following
entries:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 May 1 23:13 LogVol00 ->
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 May 1 23:13 LogVol01 ->
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol01
You're also seeing the move to /dev/mapper as 2.6 uses LVM2, which utilized
device-mapper.
