We're using emulex hardware, so we installed their drivers and tools and it seems to be ok as long as we leave sdb alone. With the emulex drivers, it automagically does multipathing, we tested this the other day, so I know RHEL4 is capable of it.
And, importantly, don't set up the second HBA until after the OS and Emulex/Qlogic drivers are installed. In the context of the environment that started this thread, that's going to be hard since it's one HBA with dual paths.
