Check in the Preferences section and Scratch Disk size. Possibly 
increasing this size (gives it part of the hard drive to use as RAM) 
here will allow your friend to open the file correctly. Check with the 
person sending it as well (if you can) and ask them what kind of machine 
they are using (memory - Processor and RAM is essential to Photoshop). 
If the machines themselves differ *too* much, it could be memory issues.
