all, thanks for the input. problem resolved.
resolution: installed LILO to the MBR. extraneous discussion: in the slackware installation process when you are installing the bootloader (LILO or nothing are the choices) there are three choices. not knowing which one to do i started with 1. choices 1 and 2's problems were, i believe, compounded by the fact that i had not made my first partition bootable on had. correcting that, though, did not fix the problem until i exercised choice 3 which is to install LILO to the MBR. rhetorical questions: did my non-boot partition really compound the problem(s)? would the problem have fixed itself if i had simply proceeded to choice 3? i don't know. onward and upward, stan Stan B.
