How about Gentoo http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Small_Footprint_Gentoo_on_USB
Plenty of room for tweaking there (-: Actually I've no tried making a usb version, but I have made a few custom boot CDs (based on both Gentoo & Slackware) - and it isn't all that hard, just a matter of remastering the image with whatever config tweaks you need in place (or pull them down from a web server, mount over nfs etc..etc..). A CD image might not be a bad place to start for a flash image as (obviously) they can't be writing to the media. David. On 6/2/06, Jason Tower <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
perhaps i didn't explain. a regular distro doesn't make special provisions to accomodate frequently written files (like in /var) which will eventually kill flash memory. and live distros aren't generally designed to have services and other system configs tweaked to run a specific way, at least not that i'm aware. what i need is something that can be easily configured like a regular distro but runs more or less read only like a live distro, perhaps with /var mounted in a ramdisk or something. jason Jason Faulkner wrote: > You should be able to fit a debian server easily inside a 512mb USB key. > > --Jay > > On 6/2/06, Jason Tower <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > >> i just ordered an inexpensive 1u server w/ 4x sata slots to be used as a >> backup storage server. assuming it will boot from a usb device i'd >> like to >> set it up to boot linux via a smallish thumb drive, then create a four >> disk >> software raid device, mount it as /archive, and make it available via >> samba, >> nfs, and sshfs. >> >> has anyone ever done a setup like this before, or have a suggestion for >> setting up the usb OS? >> >> jason >> -- >> TriLUG mailing list : >> http://www.trilug.org/mailman/listinfo/trilug >> TriLUG Organizational FAQ : http://trilug.org/faq/ >> TriLUG Member Services FAQ : http://members.trilug.org/services_faq/ >> > > -- TriLUG mailing list : http://www.trilug.org/mailman/listinfo/trilug TriLUG Organizational FAQ : http://trilug.org/faq/ TriLUG Member Services FAQ : http://members.trilug.org/services_faq/
