The first book I bought was Redhat 9.0 Bible. That book helped a lot and I still refer to it. But there is a lot it does not cover.
Here are some things I want to learn to do.
1.Learn how to write PERL scripts.
2.Learn how to add virtual servers to mine.
3.Learn shell scripts.
4.Learn how to build and configure a dial in server.
5.Learn how to write scripts and such to manage my server/servers easily.
6.Learn PHP and MYSQL to be able to use them myself.
7.Learn how to build and configure a mail server.
8.Learn how to build and configure a DNS server.
9.Learn enough UNIX/LINUX to be able to know what people are talking about and understand when they try to explain something to me.

These are some of the things I want to learn to do.

Well, there are quite a few people on the list that are willing to help
you learn. I believe someone was even working on a wiki entry for
essential linux knowledge.

When I started...oh, 8 years ago, I relied on a number of resources, but
primarily they were a Red Hat Linux Unleashed book (Red Hat 4.2 of all the
ancient distributions) and a mentor named Mark Spencer (Of Asterisk PBX
fame, and former classmate of mine).

Generally that's what it takes though, is some basic intro text and people
who are willing to take some time to impart their knowledge.

I have installed Fedora Core 5 on an extra harddrive. What I want to do at this time is to install a player that will play MP3's and internet audio and video streaming. I have been trying to learn linux for a couple of years and have learned a lot but I never have learned the basics(commands, where things go, and such). There is no place around here to learn linux.I have a stack
of books 3ft high but none that I can find starts from the basics. All of
them assume that you have a working knowledge of linux. I have been looking for someone who lived close enough to help me on occaision. I was in Raleigh
for a class and went by Redhat on Friday. That was a waste of time. They
said that I couldnt talk to anyone unless I had an appointment. That seems to be a bad way to do business. If people cant learn linux then how do they
expect to get customers? The people on Trilug and Uclug have helped me
tremendously and for that I thank everyone. I know a Newbie can be a pain
but we and I dont have anyplace else to learn. Besides,I hate MS with a
passion!

Thank You,
