In short, an upstream Flash bug. You can work around it in a variety of
ways, the easiest being installing alsa-oss from universe, then using
``aoss firefox'' from a Terminal.
LP bug #27960 [0] lists another (suboptimal) workaround.

Thanks, yeah I found that after I posted, I've backed the other
workaround and gone with yours.
I can't say that I understood the thread of the bug report very well.
