OK, I too am at a workplace that blocks IRC. (I should know, I run the
firewall.)

And yet I am more than able to get onto IRC. I SSH to login.trilug.org
where I have the shell login that is available to all TriLUG members and
I run irssi to get into IRC from the command line. (I also use the
magnificent screen to keep irssi up and running even when I'm not logged
in.)

So, the use of the "We block IRC at work so I want something else"
argument isn't really effective.
