That would do it I guess. I don't really want to go to a lot of pain at my end about this. I was hoping that I could get his machine to behave like an other IP machine. If I can't I'll wait till there are problems and sort them out then.

it's not unreasonable to do something like get an IP via DHCP, use mDNS to see who else is on the network, if there's a collision, release and renew with a different hostname, etc.

Apple is big on using mDNS for things like this. Service Discovery, automatic bootstrapping of disparate devices, etc. It actually works reasonably well with out being entirely chatty.
