This has been going on for years, it just hasn't necessarily been as consistantly obvious as this story. It comes and goes. A few years ago ( before the RIAA excitememnt ) there were several well-publicized efforts by Microsoft and the ( what was their name again -- the Business Software Alliance ( maybe?? )) bringing down the hammer on ( usually big ) businesses who weren't sure about their license status. That's where the license-checking tools, and all the ruckus about Microsoft software "calling home" came from.
