I'm confused.  What you are describing sounds exactly like what ctags
was written to do.  I presume that you have a proper tag file, similar,
if not identical to that generated by ctags?  What happens if you type
Ctrl-t when you are on the function name?

I get an error:

E73: tag stack empty
