GTKPod can create the database and file structure from scratch. If you
break the firmware partition or repartition your iPod, *then* you might
be in need of a system from which to run the firmware restore, but you
have to try to do that ;)

I've had very good luck with gtkpod and my (original) nano. Be warned,
it does have a bit of a learning curve, but nothing too difficult.
