First of all "insmod" isn't on the floppies. modprobe is there (if I
remember properly).
You can reduce initrd.gz (removing dhcpcd, wget and those programs you
don't use), if you can get that far or you can bould your own package
with the module and a /etc/init.d script to initialize it. Loading the
package as any other at boot you should get your NIC up.
