The system in generally called GNU/Linux in order to differentiate it from
GNU systems that use different kernels. It also gives respect to the two
parts of the system that can't really be done without. You can fairly easily
have a system that uses only GNU software and Linux, the kernel, but you
can't really do much without the other. The other kernels that you can use
often don't support as wide a variety of hardware as Linux does, so most GNU
systems also use Linux.
The idea of GNU/Linux-libre though I think is great. Because Linux-libre is a
separate project from vanilla Linux and lets people know right away that it's
a special version of the kernel that is made entirely of Free software.
