it definitely can leave you with no easy way to boot, but i did not think it was dangerous. one just needs to be careful and make sure one understands the process first. i simply installed GRUB2 from a Gentoo installation on another partition. it was very easy and i think GRUB2 is much better than GRUB so far, especially the os- prober, which lets GRUB2 find and list any other bootable options from a single operating system.
