According to this list kept by the FSF, an RT61 chipset requires additional  
non-free firmware in addition to the Ralink driver. The list also says that a  
Linksys WMP54G v4 works in a fully-free system, but not v4.1. You should  
confirm which one you have.

So perhaps it worked in Ubuntu because Ubuntu has that firmware in its  
default installation?
