As Andrew has said, the free drivers have come a long way but many, if not
most, still depend on the binary blobs for 3D functionality. It may not be
that the Free Software community doesn't care, as much as the lack of source
for the binary blobs may be limiting the development. It may also be a
matter of the community applying the available resources in way that benefits
as many users as possible. If we take the Free Software principle of
transfering control from the hands of the developers (proprietary approach)
into the hands of the users (Free Software approach), then failing to address
your needs as a user is a failure to apply this principle.
