An update: I tried re-creating the casper-rw file by hand, but then I was  
unable to boot the distro, so I started over. this time I was able to use the  
full capacity of the drive for some reason, so I now have a 6.8G rw file. I  
guess my only remaining question is, what are its limits (i.e. do I only get  
so many 'writes')?
