Well somethings wrong here, because when I was running Slackware with just  
OpenBox, OpenBox would cause the same thing and all I was using was the  
Radeon KMS in the kernel and in the obconf I was able to turn this off.

Forgot what it was, but I was able to get rid of it in OpenBox, so I would  
expect the same in Gnome too...
