If the phone has bluetooth it should work without a SIM card (but you might  
not be able to put a different SIM card if the phone is locked to a certain  
provider). My Nokia worked fine without a SIM card when I was abroad as does  
my current phone (Neo Freerunner). Of course the Freerunner is the best in  
terms of compatibility with GNU/Linux.
