I had a similar issue with the mini version on an old P4 Dell.
Did you try typing startx into the console window? This did the trick for me on the live CD.I know this is a pretty basic fix and I am not trying to insult your intelligence! Just want to make sure you didn't try the obvious first! 99% of the problems that I encounter are completely obvious. :)
