AIUI WiFi passwords are stored in the (encrypted?) GNOME keyring. If your session is set to logon automatically (as per a live CD) then the first time you enter a WiFi password you will be prompted for a password for the keyring. You'll need that password subsequently to enable WiFi access to whatever access point you are using. My USB card behaved this way.
