The more I fiddle with this, the more I'm convinced that it's hardware. The  
system is now booting after a short hesitation, but I cannot boot a Puppy  
Linux CD to edit GRUB and gain root access (kernel panic). It seems to be  
either the DVD or the PATA port/chip. More experimentation to be done.
