I had the same problem mentioned in this thread : I had xfce4 installed, but  
the default DM would not launch it, just pause for a second and then prompt  
me again for my login / password. Also the Window Managers list was populated  
with seemingly absent WMs, like Gnome/openbox (I'm using a fresh  
trisquel-mini).

Magic Banana's post helped me to test that XFCE was indeed working.
And Alizee's one allowed me to solve the problem altogether.
