This is embarrassing, in case it was either Me or the computer, I downloaded  
the 500mb KDE version, burnt it to disc and it installed no problem.
OK, that only left one thing, the disc I'd burnt to.
Burnt to another disc and problem solved.
My thanks to those who tried to help please forgive an old duffer who should  
have known better.
Finaly how do I mark this thread as solved?
