I thought you were using GNOME Shell (and I am confused why you don't given  
what you wrote about how much you love it).

For anyone who wants to try GNOME Shell in Trisquel, it is a matter of  
installing the gnome-session package (with Synaptic for instance), logging  
off, selecting the GNOME session and logging in.
